“Our shower in BR6 was basically unusable. Stuart turned up when he said he would, explained what was blocked (and why), and didn’t leave the bathroom looking like a crime scene. Drains perfectly now.”
Local homeowner — BR6What a Blocked Shower Drain Actually Looks Like in Real Life
The call is usually the same story, just a different bathroom. “It’s been slow for a while, but now it’s basically stopped.” And nine times out of ten, I hear it right away: that little gulping noise from the trap, the water hovering like it’s thinking about leaving… then changing its mind.
I’ve seen it in BR6 semis off Crofton Lane where the shower waste is packed with hair and soap scum, and I’ve seen it in Bromley flats where someone’s poured “miracle crystals” down the drain every month until the pipework’s coated in a gritty mess. None of that is a lecture — it’s just what I walk into.
Before you try another bottle from the supermarket: if water is backing up into the tray, or the bath is taking ages to empty, it’s usually better to sort the blockage properly once than keep poking it and hoping. If you want the broader repairs page, you can go back to my main plumbing repairs hub here.
Why This Job Goes Wrong When It’s Rushed
Clearing a shower blockage is simple when it’s done calmly — but there are a few ways it turns into a nightmare: snapped plastic fittings, crushed flexible wastes, or pushing the clog further down until it’s in the main run and now the bath, basin and shower all start misbehaving together.
It’s not always “just hair”
Hair and soap is common, yeah — but I also pull out limescale build-up, grout dust from refurbs, and the occasional “how did that get in there?” bit of plastic packaging. The fix changes depending on what it is.
Bad access is half the problem
Some shower traps are lovely: easy clean-out, decent access. Others are tucked behind tiled panels with silicone that’s been there since the Olympics. I’ll tell you what access looks like before I start pulling things apart.
Chemicals can backfire
I’m not anti-products — but repeated caustic cleaners can soften certain seals, attack chrome finishes around wastes, and leave a sludge that’s horrible to remove. Sometimes that’s why it’s blocked in the first place.
If the Tray’s Filling Up, Don’t Wait for It to Overflow
Quick one: if water is creeping toward the bathroom door, stop using the shower and ring me. If it’s near electrics or it’s leaking through the ceiling below, that’s a “call now” situation.
Call 07706 889 614 and tell me: bath or shower, how long it’s been slow, and whether any other drains in the house are acting odd. If you’d rather type it out, you can send an enquiry here and attach photos.
How I Clear Shower & Bath Blockages (Without Making a Mess of Your Bathroom)
I’m not turning up to wave a plunger around and hope. The aim is to clear the blockage, make sure it’s draining properly, and leave you with a bathroom you can actually use — without damaging traps, tiles, or pipework.
Typical approach (and yes, it depends on the setup): I’ll start by checking the waste and trap, then confirm whether the issue is local to the shower/bath or further along the run. If it’s a trap blockage, it’s often a clean-out and reset. If it’s down the line, we may need mechanical clearing and a proper flush through.
If it turns out your blockage is really a wider drainage issue (it happens — especially when multiple outlets are slow), I’ll point you to the right place: see my drainage and blockage service page for the heavier jobs. Different kit, different scope.
And if the bathroom is mid-refurb and you’ve got trades in already, say that on the phone. I do a lot of work alongside builders — timing matters when tiles are going in tomorrow. If you’re planning a full upgrade, this is worth a look too: bathroom refurbishment options and how I run those projects.
A Couple of Real “Blocked Drain” Moments (So You Know I’m Not Guessing)
Petts Wood, BR5: A shower that “only backed up sometimes”. Turned out the waste was partially blocked, and the trap had been fitted with a slight belly in the pipe. On quick showers it coped. On hair-wash days, it didn’t. Cleared it, re-set the fall, tested it properly. The customer’s exact words were: “Oh… it’s meant to drain like that.”
Bromley near the Glades: Bath draining slowly for months. Three different chemical cleaners used on rotation. The smell told me everything. The blockage had turned into a thick, greasy sludge sitting in the run. Once it was cleared and flushed through, the bathroom stopped smelling damp too — that was the bit they didn’t expect.
Orpington, close to Darrick Wood: “Blocked shower” call, but the toilet was also slow. That’s the moment you stop focusing on just one drain and check the bigger picture. We handled it as a system issue, not a single trap, and it saved them calling someone else two days later.
If your shower/bath is blocked and you’re not sure whether it’s just that one outlet — tell me what else is happening in the house. If you’ve got a toilet problem as well, this page may help: toilet blockage help in Orpington & Bromley.
Why People Call Me Instead of “Just Trying One More Thing”
I’m a sole trader. So when you ring, you’re not getting a call centre, and you’re not getting someone different turning up. It’s me in the van, and I’m the one who has to stand by the quality of the job. That’s the whole point.
I’ll be straight with you about access, what I think the cause is, and whether it looks like a quick clear or something that needs more time. If it’s not sensible to do it “today”, I’ll say so — because rushing and breaking a trap under a tiled shower is the kind of “cheap fix” that becomes expensive fast.
For broader work in the same area (leaks, taps, cylinders, odd faults), you can browse the main plumbing repairs page here — different problems, same approach: calm, tidy, and explained properly.
What Customers Say After the Water’s Finally Gone
“We’re a small contractor and needed someone who could sort a drainage issue mid-refurb without drama. Clear comms, quick fix, and our client was happy. That’s all we want, really.”
Building contractor — Bromley“I appreciated the honesty. He told me what I could safely do straight away, then came out and fixed it properly. No upsell, no waffle.”

Blocked Shower & Bath Drain FAQs
Sometimes, once, on a mild blockage — maybe. But if you’ve already tried it and it’s still slow (or the water is backing up), I’d stop. Repeated chemical use can create that thick sludge I mentioned, and it can also damage some seals and finishes. If you tell me what you’ve used, I can plan the best way to clear it.
Hair + soap scum is the classic. But in Orpington and Bromley we also see plenty of limescale build-up, especially where water has been slow for a while. Add shampoo residue, a bit of grit, and it forms a plug that doesn’t shift easily.
Not always. If there’s a sensible access panel or the trap is reachable, it can be straightforward. But some bathrooms have been sealed up tightly (usually for aesthetics), and access becomes the main issue. I’ll talk you through what I expect before I start pulling anything apart.
If only the shower is slow, it’s often local to that trap/waste. If the bath, basin, or toilet are also slow, or you’re getting gurgling and smells, it can be further along the line. Mention all symptoms when you call — it saves time and avoids the “fix one thing, miss the real cause” situation.
I can usually give a realistic expectation once I know what’s blocked, how bad it is, and what access looks like. If you can, send a photo of the waste/trap area and your postcode via my enquiry form — it helps me be accurate instead of guessing.
If I’ve got a gap, yes. If I’m mid-job, I’ll still try to help — even if it’s talking you through how to reduce the risk until I can get there. Ring 07706 889 614 and tell me where you are (Bromley South, Orpington, BR7, wherever) and what the water is doing right now.

“Do it once, do it properly — and don’t leave people stressed.”
I started SKR Plumbing & Heating in 2020 after years working for other firms around South East London. The trade part was always fine — the bit customers hated was the not-knowing: no updates, missed appointments, jobs left half done. So I built SKR around doing the simple things properly.
Qualifications-wise, I’m City & Guilds trained, I hold BPEC / unvented hot water certification (ERS), and I’m Gas Safe registered for boiler and gas work. For a blocked shower drain you don’t *need* a fancy title — but what you do need is someone who won’t snap your fittings, won’t pretend it’s fixed when it isn’t, and won’t disappear if it blocks again a week later.
Most days I’m in and out of Orpington, Bromley, Petts Wood, Chislehurst and the surrounding BR postcodes. If you’re booking from a building site, I’m happy to work from drawings, WhatsApp photos, or a quick walkaround. If you’re a homeowner, I’ll explain it in plain English and keep your bathroom tidy.
If you want to send details quietly (photos help a lot), use the job enquiry page here. If it’s urgent and you’re dealing with standing water, just call 07706 889 614.
